A new family home located within a sensitive conservation area plot, Dunblane, Stirlingshire.

Overview

A new home for a young family, set on an elevated site at the edge of a conservation area.

The ambition was to create a contemporary house that would sit comfortably within its surroundings — respecting the character of the area, while providing a home that works easily for modern family life.

The Brief

Like many projects at this stage, the starting point was not a fixed vision, but a series of ideas.

There was a desire for a home that felt open and connected to its setting, alongside the practical needs of a growing family. At the same time, the sensitivities of the site introduced clear constraints — in terms of scale, form, and relationship to neighbouring properties.

The role at this stage was to bring those factors into alignment — defining what mattered most, and establishing a clear direction that could be developed with confidence.

The Approach

The design responds directly to its setting.

The form draws from the language of traditional buildings found locally, reinterpreted in a more contemporary way. Materials were carefully considered to ensure the house sits naturally within its context, while still expressing a clear identity of its own.

Internally, the focus was on creating spaces that feel connected — both to one another and to the landscape beyond. Light, proportion, and movement through the house were treated as part of a continuous whole, rather than a series of individual decisions.

The Outcome

The result is a home that feels settled in its setting and straightforward to live in.

Spaces relate naturally to one another. The house opens outward where it should, and provides privacy where it matters. Materials and proportions work together to create a sense of coherence, rather than drawing attention to individual elements.

It is a house that supports day-to-day life with ease, while maintaining a calm and consistent character throughout.

Continuity

Following completion, we were asked to work with the same client on a further home.
