Join BHA

We’re looking for an experienced architect to join the practice.

BHA is a small architectural practice based in Bridge of Allan, working on bespoke homes and significant residential projects across Scotland.

We take on a relatively small number of projects and remain closely involved in each of them.

We’re now looking for an architect who can take genuine responsibility for projects and their outcomes, and who would like to play an important part in the practice as it develops.

The role

Our architects work across the whole project rather than individual stages or packages.

That means working directly with clients and consultants and taking projects through planning, building warrant, technical design, tender and construction.

It also means thinking ahead — understanding what needs to happen next, identifying issues before they become problems, making sensible decisions and knowing when something needs wider discussion.

You would work closely with the director, particularly as you get to know the practice and our projects. The intention, however, is not for every decision to travel upwards.

We’re looking for someone capable of taking ownership.

The work

Our projects are predominantly bespoke new homes and significant residential projects.

They often involve difficult sites, planning constraints, existing buildings, demanding briefs or clients who need considerable guidance in establishing what they should build.

We are interested in the whole process — understanding the problem, developing the right response and then ensuring that what has been designed is properly delivered.

That requires good design judgement, but also an understanding of construction, technical design, procurement and the realities of getting buildings built.

Working at BHA

We’re deliberately building a small practice rather than a large one.

The aim is not to take on as many projects as possible. We want to be selective about the work we take on and build a highly capable team around it.

That means fewer projects, experienced people and a high level of involvement in each one.

Responsibility sits close to the people doing the work. You would have direct involvement with clients, consultants and projects, with the opportunity to influence decisions rather than simply carry them out.

There is support when it is needed and oversight where it matters, but we want experienced architects to have the space to use their own judgement.

For the right person, there is also the opportunity to become an important part of the practice as it develops.

Who we're looking for

We’re looking for an architect with enough experience to take responsibility for the delivery of substantial residential projects.

Someone who understands how buildings go together, can manage consultants and information, communicates well with clients and remains interested in both the architectural idea and how it is eventually built.

Just as importantly, we’re looking for someone who notices things.

Someone who asks questions, thinks ahead and deals with issues rather than simply passing them on.

You don't need to approach every problem in the same way we would. Good judgement matters more than that.

A conversation

You may already be working somewhere you like and not actively looking for another position.

That's fine.

If the way we work sounds interesting, we'd be happy to have a confidential conversation about the practice, the work we're doing and what joining BHA might look like.
